Volkswagen will unveil an electric concept car next month

Volkswagen is unveiling an all-electric concept car at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, just a few months after the automaker was slammed for hiding the emissions output in select vehicles.

Herbert Diess, chairman of Volkswagen Passenger Cars' board, will show the car during his keynote address on January 5. His remarks will also focus "on electric mobility driving the automotive market," according to a press release.

Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association, noted that CES was unaware of the emissions scandal when Diess was asked to give the keynote speech, but felt audience members would still be interested in hearing Volkswagen's vision for an electric concept car.

"When we agreed to a Volkswagen keynote earlier this year we, along with the world, did not know much about emissions testing," the press release reads.

"Now, VW has an opportunity at CES to show the world its designs for the future and how the company views electric mobility and sustainability.”

In September, the Environmental Protection Agency accused Volkswagen of violating the Clean Air Act for installing software on vehicles that violates environmental standards meant to reduce smog.

The software, known as a “defeat device,” conceals the cars’ emissions of nitrogen oxide, a pollutant that contributes to the creation of smog and ozone and causes health issues like asthma attacks.

The German automaker said today that about 36,000 vehicles were affected, far fewer than the 800,000 for which it said had been last month.
