Tesla's big event sounds like it might be kind of boring

Get ready for a super low-key (read: boring) Tesla event.

Tesla is unveiling its Model 3 Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. PT (you can tune in on the Tesla webpage), but it won't be as exciting as other Tesla reveals in the past. Tesla will only unveil a working prototype of the Model 3, not its actual production model.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk even prepped everyone for the subdued nature of the announcement on Twitter Wednesday night, noting that part 2 of the Model 3 reveal will take "things to another level" and will occur closer to production.

The press is not allowed to take photos other than whatever low-quality images and video they can grab on their smartphones. Overall, the nature of the announcement should be fairly subdued.

But here's what we are expecting: the Model 3 is priced at $35,000 and is expected to boast a range of 200 miles or more. A leak Wednesday night by Electrek claims there will be a version of the Model 3 that offers a range of 300 miles, but it will be priced in the $50,000 to $60,000 range.

It's also expected there will be a Model 3 that can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under four seconds, according to that same Electrek leak.

The car will also have Autopilot, the semi-autonomous driving mode Tesla launched last year in the Model S. But like that 300-mile range, those features will be reserved for those willing to shell out $50,000 to $60,000.

A spokesperson from Tesla wouldn’t confirm Electrek’s report or add any further details, telling Tech Insider that Tesla doesn't "comment on speculation.”

Even though it's going to be a low-key event, people are already lining up to pre-order the Model 3 before they even know what it looks like.
