The entire country of Portugal ran on renewable energy alone for four days straight.

The country was able to last 107 hours without drawing energy from non-renewable sources like thermal power plants, coal, or natural gas, according to Portugal's ZERO System Sustainable Land Association.

The data indicates that Portugal can be more ambitious in transitioning to 100% renewable energy, ZERO wrote.

Portugal is not the first country to achieve a milestone of this nature. Germany recently produced so much renewable energy it had to pay people to use it, Quartz reported. The country's solar, wind, hydro, and biomass plants were supplying 87% of the energy being consumed on May 8.

Countries are slowly starting to lean more on renewable energy sources. The Guardian reported that in 2015, wind power met 42% of the electricity demand in Denmark, followed by 20% in Spain, 13% in Germany, and 11% in the UK.

Scotland is also in the midst of building the world's largest floating windfarm that will power 20,000 homes.
