The iPhone 7 Plus will have a very different camera than previous iPhones

The iPhone 7 camera could be getting a big upgrade.

Earlier rumors suggested that Apple might add a dual lens camera to the next generation of iPhone, but analyst Ming Chi-Kuo of KGI Securities predicted in an investors research note found by MacRumors that only the larger Plus model of the iPhone 7 generation with a 5.5-inch screen would have the dual lens camera. (Chi-Kuo has an amazing track record with Apple rumors, so we're inclined to believe the prediction.)

In a previous note a few months back, Kuo suggested that Apple would release a separate "Pro" model of the iPhone 7 Plus that would exclusively feature a dual lens camera. The regular iPhone 7 and 7 Plus would feature a standard single lens camera. Now it looks like there will just be two models of the iPhone 7 and the larger one will have the dual lens camera.

In his latest report, Kuo also claims the iPhone 7's design will be similar to the iPhone 6 generation's design, and that the main improvement over the previous generation will be the dual lens camera.

So far, only a sketchy photo of the supposed iPhone 7 Plus and a case design leak with a large camera cutout that like it could accommodate a dual lens camera.

Why would you need a dual lens camera?

The LG G5 is one of the few phones to feature a dual lens camera, and it could hint at what an iPhone 7 Plus with a dual camera could do.

On the G5, one of the lenses has a wider field of the view that looks like it was taken from further back than the other, and captures more of your surroundings. Like this:

It also lets you get dramatic zooming effects.

Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone in September.
