It's that time of year again: April Fool's Day, when every tech company under the sun decides to release a fake product to fool the masses.

This year, Google debuted its "Mic Drop" tool for Gmail. Interestingly, it could be a useful tool for ending conversations, and it actually does work.

Update on 4/1 11:38 a.m. PDT: Google ended up abruptly pulling the prank from Gmail on Friday, after it caused outrage among users across the web.

Here's how the original prank was described:

"Today, Gmail is making it easier to have the last word on any email with Mic Drop. Simply reply to any email using the new 'Send + Mic Drop' button. Everyone will get your message, but that's the last you'll ever hear about it. Yes, even if folks try to respond, you won't see it," the company wrote on its blog.

If you loaded up Gmail, and hit reply, you would see the new "mic drop" button. It looked like this:

But it wasn't fake. If you went and hit the button, it would actually insert that hilarious Minion dropping the mic into the thread, then exit out of it completely.

On February 28, Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company, joined 31 other media groups and filed a $2.3 billion suit against Google in Dutch court, alleging losses suffered due to the company's advertising practices.
