The biggest question about Jon Snow's past will be answered by end of this sixth season of "Game of Thrones," Tech Insider has learned.

After years of in-depth fan theories and speculation, Jon's real parents will be revealed by the end of this season's finale, according to a source with knowledge of the remaining two episodes.

The identity of Jon's parents has massive implications for the entire "Game of Thrones" universe. The most popular fan theory suggests that Jon is not the bastard son of Ned Stark, but the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, Ned's sister.

For more on that, check out our full breakdown of the "R + L = J" theory.

If that theory holds true, Jon would be the nephew of Daenerys Targaryen, who has been preparing an army to cross the sea and take back the kingdom of Westeros.

While we don't have confirmation that Daenerys and Jon are related, our source hinted that it may be the case. If Rhaegar married Lyanna in secret, Jon's bloodline would give him first claim to the Iron Throne over his aunt Daenerys.

Talk about a plot twist.

Jon being half Stark and half Targaryen would make him the literal "Song of Ice and Fire," which is the title "Game of Thrones" writer George R.R. Martin has given the entire book series.

In short, the identity of his true parents is a very big deal.

This season has teased Jon's secret parentage through a couple of brief flashbacks to Ned Stark's mission to rescue Lyanna Stark from The Tower Joy. But we haven't been shown inside the tower yet to see why Lyanna died in "a bed of blood," according to the books. (Was the blood due to giving birth, or something else?)

Now that the show has progressed past the books, anything is possible in the remaining two episodes of this season. We know that the next episode, titled "Battle of the Bastards," will focus primarily on the epic battle between Jon and Ramsey Bolton's forces.

That leaves the season finale for what could possibly be Jon's parentage reveal. Could we be returning to the Tower of Joy? The episode is cryptically titled "The Winds of Winter."
