Boston Dynamics just unveiled an incredible new humanoid robot

Boston Dynamics unveiled a new humanoid robot in a video Tuesday and it's so life-like it's almost scary.

Called Atlas, The Next Generation, the robot has capabilities like walking in snow, picking up objects, opening doors, and even helping itself up off the floor. Boston Dynamics writes that it's designed to operate outdoors and inside buildings.

It moves very quietly when walking, which has been a problem when designing high-functioning robots in the past, as we saw when Boston Dynamic cut its Big Dog project for being too loud.

Here's a look at Atlas:

Pretty incredible.

At one point a researcher actively prevented Atlas from picking up an object to the point where you almost felt badly for it.

But each time Atlas was able to reorient itself and complete its task.

The robot uses LIDAR, the same techno lgy driverless cars use, and has stereo sensors in its head that help it navigate, avoid obstacles, and assess the terrain. The version seen in the video is 5'9 and 180 pounds.
