This might be our first look at a case for the iPhone 7

Thanks to serial leaker OnLeaks, this might be our first look at a case for the iPhone 7, the successor to the iPhone 6s that’s launching later this year.

If legitimate, this case reveals some important details about the phone.

First, take a look at these photos, which OnLeaks posted to Twitter on Wednesday morning:

While there’s no way to confirm whether or not this is an actual case built for the iPhone 7, it does feature a couple of differences from most iPhone 6s cases, which suggests this could be built for a newer, different iPhone.

First of all, take a look at the fourth photo, which shows the bottom of the case: You'll notice there's a hole for the Lightning port, which is surrounded by two symmetrical speaker grilles of equal width. Most iPhone 6s cases out there have a big hole for a speaker grille on one side, and a smaller hole for the headphone jack on the other. This new case might suggest Apple is adding stereo speakers to the iPhone, which could also mean that Apple has indeed ditched the 3.5 mm headphone jack, which has been rumored for several months now.

The other major notable difference is the size of the camera hole on the rear side of the case. 9to5Mac believes this might suggest a dual camera system in the iPhone 7, which could allow for nifty camera effects like 3D images. That dual camera system was another rumor that's been circulating over the last couple of months. Still, there’s no way of corroborating this information based off a simple case leak.

Other aspects of the iPhone 7, like its bezels and screen size, can’t be gleaned from this case leak either. Same goes for the phone’s other important details, especially its innards. But of course, it’s important to take these photos with a grain of salt. There’s no way we can verify whether or not this is a real case for a yet-to-be-released iPhone; on the flip side, many case manufacturers often get access to smartphone designs early so they can build enough cases in time for the phone's launch, and schematics and cases tend to leak early from those companies all the time.

There's no way we can know if this is real or not, but one thing is certain: We will surely see more leaks of this kind in the months to come, at least until Apple officially announces the iPhone 7.

We don’t expect to see the iPhone 7 until September, but Apple will reportedly launch a brand new iPhone this month: the 4-inch iPhone SE. You can learn more about it here.
