Abe Vigoda — a character actor best known for his role in "The Godfather" — died in his sleep Tuesday morning. He was 94, and his family cited the cause of death as "old age" in a statement to the press.
Minutes after the news broke, an apparent fan site dedicated to Vigoda was updated to reflect the news. Titled "Abe Vigoda Status," the page is hosted at the URL www.abevigoda.com and, according to Whois Lookup, has been registered to an anonymous user since 2001.
The only apparent function of the site was to inform visitors whether or not Vigoda was alive or dead. Here's how it looks now:
Apart from Abe Vigoda's life status, the page is barren except for a link underneath the actor's photo to a MP3 track called "Abe Vigoda's Dead (Premortem Mix)." The song is a parody version of "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus, and appears to have been recorded by two men named Greg Peters and Greg Galcik, according to this YouTube video description.
It's not the only fan page to be updated in the wake of the actor's death. One fake Abe Vigoda Twitter account (@AbeVigoda), which has existed since April 2007, tweeted out the following message at 2:43 p.m. EST:
