With more and more content heading online in today’s digital age, it's little surprise teens and young adults may prefer YouTube and Vine stars to Hollywood actors and celebrities.

In a recent study, Defy Media's research team at Acumen spoke with 60 people between the ages of 13 and 24 at this year's annual VidCon celebration in Anaheim, California and surveyed an additional 400 more online. Among their findings was that the majority prefer digital stars to A-list celebrities and movie stars.

"YouTube is definitely more interactive," one teen tells Acumen. "I think that's why people love it so much more. There's a stronger connection between the person and the viewer."

Connection is one word that's used over and over again when teens describe their relationships with digital stars. According to the study, teens and young adults describe YouTubers as someone who is "just like me, understands me, someone I trust, has the best advice, doesn't try to be perfect ... and likes the same things I do."

Those interviewed also suggest that YouTubers are more likely than actors or celebrities to reach out to fans on social networks like Twitter. 73% of teens and young adults report feeling close to YouTubers as opposed to 45% who say they feel close to TV and movie stars.

Defy shared the above video with Tech Insider detailing why many individuals rather spend their time invested in YouTube and Vine stars instead of actors.
