This insanely warm December weather means there will be huge discounts after Christmas

If you haven't yet bought new winter clothes this year, you're in luck.

The U.S. has experienced an incredibly warm winter, and as a result, stores didn't sell as many winter clothes as they expected, says Jonathan Eyl, the lead consumer analyst at NASDAQ.

That means we should see huge sales right after Christmas and into the new year.

"At department stores, we're seeing racks of inventory sitting in the hallways," he tells Tech Insider.

The biggest sales will likely be on winter apparel, like fleece coats, snow boots, and knit sweaters. Eyl predicts the warm weather will affect department stores and boutiques across the U.S., and particularly on the East Coast.

In the first 20 days of the month, cities on the East Coast have recorded more than 2,600 record-high temperatures. Many will likely see their warmest Christmas to date. In New York City, it may even hit 70 degrees.

US stores lost around $185 million in November from the warm weather, according to Planalytics, a consulting firm that helps retailers with weather-related business concerns.

Besides the warm weather, Eyl notices another reason for the upcoming sales. Shoppers are buying less expensive Christmas gifts, rather than high-priced designer items.

He says more people are instead spending their money on long-term debts, like mortgages, college loans, and car payments. Therefore, we should see major discounts on name-brand items.

"Coupled with the weather, discounts are going to be crazy," Eyl says.

For a true steal, you might want to snag a designer coat after December 25.
