Volvo publicly announced Thursday that it's aiming to sell one million "electrified" cars by the year 2025.
Ambitious? Maybe.
Volvo said in a press release that it hopes to accomplish this by creating two or more hybrid versions of every car it sells. The company also said that its first fully-electric car will be on the market sometime in 2019.
Volvo has actually had this plan in mind for the past five years. The V60, S60, and V90, XC90, and S90 cars have all been designed so that they could have some sort of electric powertrain dropped in.
Last year Volvo sold a record 503,127 cars, according to Automotive News. If the company can continue to keep this up, it might actually be able to pull through for its goal.
Currently the automaker has its stunning XC90 T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid SUV. It's a high powered and radically safe SUV. And it's a plug-in electric car hybrid. When Forbes had it, they were reporting consistent fuel economy ratings of 35 MPG+. That's way better than what most SUVs its size offer.
If Volvo is successful with bringing at least partially-electric powertrains to its cars, then great. The change is welcome.
