Volvo is continuing its crusade of bringing beautiful, new, innovative vehicles to the world.

The company showed off two new compact cars Wednesday, which will be available with multiple powertrains including full-electric and a gas-electric hybrid.

These cars will be part of Volvo's 40 Series model range. This means they're meant to be smaller than the 60 Series (S60, V60, XC90) and the 90 Series (S90, V90, XC90) cars.

Volvo said in its press release that the two concepts will be built on a "more electric car friendly" new platform. The company's calling it its new Compact Modular Architecture platform.

The "twin-engine" hybrid model will use a turbocharged three-cylinder gas-powered motor.

Volvo's new push for electric cars is part of the company's hopes to sell 1 million electrified cars by 2025.

This is the 40.1 concept car. It will likely become the XC40 model Volvo crossover when it hits production.

Its competition will likely be cars like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

From the looks of it, this sedan is riding pretty high up.

Which could mean there will be a Cross Country trim level like what's already offered with the S60 model.

That big sunroof is a nice touch.

The taillights are similarly designed to those used on the S90.

And those headlights are incredibly familiar-looking as well.

Volvo said that the front-end on the 40.2 is "progressive, sporty and youthful."

I don't know about those things, but it definitely looks sharp.

The finalized production versions of these 40 Series cars should be ready in 2017, but it's likely that the electric versions could take a bit longer. Volvo has said, however, that its first fully electric car will come in 2019.
