Nintendo's next major 'Zelda' game just got massively delayed to 2017

When you hear the word "Nintendo," a few characters immediately come to mind: an Italian plumber; an angry gorilla; an elfin boy with a sword out to save a princess.

It's the latter we're concerned with today.

The latest entry in the "Legend of Zelda" series is getting pushed out of its 2016 release window into early 2017, though no specific month has been given.

Moreover, the newest "Legend of Zelda" game will launch on both Nintendo's Wii U — its current home game console — and the Japanese gaming giant's next game console, currently codenamed "NX."

The game's been shown repeatedly over the years, though it's never been given an official name beyond "The Legend of Zelda." It's also been repeatedly delayed — it was supposed to launch on Nintendo's Wii U back in 2015.

The game will apparently get a big showing at this year's annual E3 video game trade show, which takes place in Los Angeles this June.

So, why is the game delayed yet again? Nintendo offered the following statement:

The latest installment in this classic series is scheduled to launch simultaneously for both Wii U and NX, and both versions of the game have been in development in tandem. Because the developers need more time to polish the game, it will launch in 2017, but it will be the focus of Nintendo’s presence at E3.

We'll be at E3 checking out the new "Zelda" later this year; Nintendo plans to unveil its "NX" console this fall, and hopefully we'll hear even more about the simultaneous launch of the new "Zelda" then.
