Here are the most popular emojis in every state

Between the months of July and October 2015, ImproveNet, an online home improvement service, analyzed nearly 2.5 million tweets. The tweets all contained at least one emoji as well as a reference to one of 252 locations throughout the U.S.

ImproveNet used that data to create a breakdown of emoji usage in every state.

The state with the saddest emoji usage was Montana, and Washington D.C. is somehow the happiest and angriest?

Beer and wine rule the drinking emoji category, but there are a few states that prefer the classic martini.

America loves football, but states with a team in the World Series last year tweeted about baseball more. Maine loves rowing.

Most states pick a neutral skin tone, but a select few skew darker and lighter.

2015 was the first year people could adjust the skin tone of emoji on the iPhone. The different tones are based on the Fitzpatrick scale, the most commonly used classification system for classifying skin color.

"We tracked which skin shade each state chose most frequently and found that most of the country is comfortable calling themselves a Type III, which burns moderately but tans uniformly and can have any hair color," the study said. "Notable exceptions are Alaska and Rhode Island, whose locals see themselves as a shade or two paler; Delaware, where residents are firmly a IV; and North Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana, which boast those who identify as a solid Type V."
