This shape-shifting tent can turn into a hammock and a sleeping bag

Outdoors company Crua Outdoors is taking the traditional notion of a tent and turning it on its head.

The company is developing a new tent called the Crua Hybrid that can be folded to become a hammock, a sleeping bag, or a single-person tent all in one convenient package.

The Hybrid can also be used as a "bivy" or bivouac tent, which is a low-ceiling crawl shelter used by hikers and climbers with limited space.  You can see the bivy tent design in the lower left corner:

The tent also comes with plenty of poles — you can prop up the height so that it's a more traditional single-person tent, as you can see on the top left.

Here's what a test model of the tent looks like in real life:

The tent features a built-in inflatable mattress, three windows, mesh venting layers, and the ability to link up with other Hybrid tents, so you can start your own little tent city if you needed to.

There are a couple caveats. The tent weighs 9 pounds, which is much heavier than competing "ultralight" tents. For instance, a Tarptent Double Rainbow weighs a mere 2.7 pounds.

But if you you don't particularly care about weight and don't like packing hammocks, mattress pads, and sleeping bags separately, give the Crua Hybrid a shot.

On August 9, the company is offering 100 tents for pre-order on Kickstarter at a 50% discount. Prices haven't been announced yet, but if the company's other tent offerings give any indication, it'll be around $1,000 to $2,000.
