Once an office luxury amenity, the standing desk may soon invade the classroom. The UpGrade is an adjustable-height desk and balance board system that turns any learning environment into an aerobics class.

Kids can tackle their homework or play video games while standing on a rubber deck that rocks under their weight, forcing them to engage core muscles. The creators call it a "perfect alternative to the couch."

The system, designed by Santa Barbara, California-based FluidStance, aims to increase motion in the home or classroom. Rather than replace conventional sitting desks, the UpGrade might be stationed at the back of the room where kids can unleash any excess energy.

You might say you can't put a price tag on the health and wellness of a child. Others say, yep — it's $947 and it's now available on Kickstarter.

The package includes one desk and three balance boards. Like TOMS shoes' one-for-one program, FluidStance will donate one system to a school of the customer's choice with purchase.

Nearly $1,000 seems like a high cost for a glorified wobble board, which retail for as little as $14 on Amazon. Engadget's Daniel Cooper points out that the UpGrade is made in the US from responsibly sourced materials, like old milk jugs, and that drives up the price.

FluidStance argues the system is worth it. Third-party testing saw a 14.5% increase in kids' heart rate when they stood on the UpGrade's balance board. There was reportedly no "drop off in cognitive performance while standing," though it's easy to imagine the device might be distracting for some kids.

The UpGrade could at least make it easier for kids to move around in class — without getting in trouble.
