If you have a hoverboard, keep it out of New York.
The two-wheeled electric vehicles (toys?!), which have exploded in popularity in recent months, are illegal in New York, according to an NYPD spokesperson.
"Hoverboards are prohibited by New York state Law since they are considered motor vehicles that cannot be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles," the NYPD spokesperson said in an email to Tech Insider.
But there was still a lot of confusion over this.
On Monday, New York's 26th Precinct, which is located in Harlem, tweeted a warning to citizens that hoverboards were illegal, citing a code that mentioned electric scooters with handlebars. But the tweet was later deleted, which caused many to question whether or not hoverboards were illegal at all. The NYPD spokesperson wouldn't comment on whether or not hoverboards are illegal because of the code referenced in the tweet. The spokesperson would only confirm hoverboards are illegal.
