New York is asking residents to test their internet speeds — here's why

New York is currently investigating the state’s biggest internet service providers (ISPs) — namely, Verizon, Cablevision and Time Warner.

To help with the investigation, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is asking state residents to test their internet speeds and submit the results online.

New York residents are encouraged to visit this website to run a broadband speed test. The attorney general’s website recommends you take screen shots of your results, fill out a form on this website, and submit your results and screen shots here.

“New Yorkers should get the internet speeds they pay for,” Schneiderman said in a statement. “Too many of us may be paying for one thing, and getting another.”

In October, Schneiderman’s office launched an investigation into the three big ISPs, which all have contractual deals with other networks to mutually exchange data. The problem is, Schneiderman's office believes business disputes over these deals, as well as technical issues, have been disrupting service to the extent that people are paying for higher data speeds each month but not getting them.

The attorney general’s office says it has sent all three companies individual letters asking for things like internet speed tests and customer disclosure agreements.

According to Reuters, the ISPs say they are “confident” in their internet speeds and plan to assist Schneiderman’s office in the investigation.
