One of the year's most anticipated PlayStation 4 games just got delayed

One upcoming PlayStation 4 game has been the talk of game fans, casual players, and even late night television show hosts for months now: "No Man's Sky."

It's a gorgeous game about exploring space, which promises near-infinite exploration. Just look at this:

Unfortunately, that game just got pushed out of its original release date — June 21 — into August 9.

The game's developer, a small British group named Hello Games, announced as much on Friday evening. Hello Games head Sean Murray said it's being delayed for a bit of "extra polish" as it gets closer to being finished. "As we approached our final deadlines, we realized that some key moments needed extra polish to bring them up to our standards," Murray said on the PlayStation Blog.

While Hello Games is known for making high quality games, none have been quite as ambitious as this one.

In "No Man's Sky," you play as an explorer from a first-person perspective. You've got a ship, you've got the ability to shoot some enemies and mine for resources, but your growth and the world you shape in-game is created by each player. The game is procedurally generated, meaning it's created by algorithms. There are billions of planets to discover, each with its own geography and life forms. It's a pretty big deal, both literally and figuratively. As a result, there are millions of people who are very excited to play it.

Earlier this week, Kotaku reported a rumor that the game had been pushed out. No reason was given for the delay, but excited fans everywhere took to social media to express their frustration.

Murray attempted to soothe aggrieved fans in his blog post.

"Making this game is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we’re prepared to make the tough choices to get it right," he wrote. And, in fairness to Murray and Hello Games, games getting delayed to make sure they're as good as they can be before people buy said games is a solid practice.

"To the loyal community who’s stuck by our side since the unveiling of 'No Man’s Sky' years ago," Murray wrote, "We hope you’ll accept our sincere apology and I am humbly asking that you’ll still look forward to exploring our universe despite the slight delay."

The game arrives — slightly delayed — on PlayStation 4 and PC on August 9 in North America, August 10 in Europe, and August 12 in the UK.
