America's gun crisis summed up in one chilling statistic

Last Thursday a gunman opened fire at a community college in Oregon, killing nine people.

It was the 994th mass shooting since the massacre of 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012

The most excruciating thing: more kids are getting killed by guns than cops.

As Nicholas Kristof noted in the New York Times on Sunday, "In America, more preschoolers are shot dead each year (82 in 2013) than police officers are in the line of duty (27 in 2013), according to figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the FBI."

If there's any good news, it's that countries like Australia have gotten their mass shooting problems under control, so the United States may be able to one day as well.
