Here is where Americans sleep the least

If you live in the US, there's a good chance that you're behind on sleep. An estimated 70 million Americans suffer from sleep problems. Now, new results from a national survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirm that about a third of Americans aren't getting adequate shuteye.

After asking about 444,000 US adults how many hours of sleep they get in an average 24-hour period in 2014, just 65% reported that they got seven or more hours of sleep each night — the recommended amount.

Researchers tabulated responses from each state, and we ranked them from most to least sleepy. Want to see how your state stacked up? Check out the results here:

The team found that Hawaii contained the highest concentration of sleep-deprived people (only 56% of respondents there reported getting seven or more hours of sleep each night). South Dakotans were the least likely to be sleep-deprived (nearly 72% of them got seven or more hours of sleep per night).

Long-term sleep deprivation is associated with an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and mental distress.
