Nintendo is finally making a female version of one of its most iconic characters

For years, Nintendo's most iconic characters have been two white guys (Mario, Link) and a gorilla named Donkey Kong.

There are plenty of notable females, but they tend to be of the "princess in need of saving" variety. Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, and Zelda were all introduced to us through the scope of ladies in peril. 

Nintendo is turning a corner, apparently.

On Thursday evening, Nintendo unveiled a new character named "Linkle" — a female version of Link, the iconic hero of the "Legend of Zelda" series.

They're big into tunics.

Instead of a sword and shield, Linkle has two crossbows.

Her debut is in a game named "Hyrule Warriors Legends," for Nintendo's handheld console: the 3DS.
