Thanks to his performance in "The Revenant," Leonardo DiCaprio has finally won his first Oscar for best actor. He used his platform to talk about a cause that is very important to him.
While talking about the harsh winter conditions in which the Oscar-winning film was made under, DiCaprio highlighted the importance of climate change awareness.
"Making 'The Revenant' was about man’s relationship to the natural world. A world we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history," DiCaprio pointed out while taking the stage. "Our production had to move to the southern tip of this planet just to find snow. Climate change is real. It is happening right now."
DiCaprio said that everybody needs to come together to fix this immediately.
"It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people or the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people who will be most affected by this. For our children’s children and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed." DiCaprio said.
DiCaprio has spoken out about climate change in the past. He heads the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. He most recently spoke about the topic at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
