The No. 1 way to keep produce fresh longer

How many times have you bought a ton of produce at the store, only to throw it away a week later when it's all gone bad?

It's hard to eat healthy when fruits and vegetables spoil so quickly.

Well, America's Test Kitchen chef and food science expert Dan Souza say this trick will help keep your produce fresh much longer.

"The way you store it is the most important thing," he told Tech Insider. "A lot of people just throw produce straight into their crisper drawer, uncovered. And it's gonna shrivel pretty quickly."

So what's his secret? When you get home, take that produce out of any packaging from the store and put it into another plastic bag.

"You definitely want to keep [it] in a Ziploc bag, usually open so there's a little ventilation," he said. "It creates a nice little environment for herbs, citrus, carrots, mushrooms, [etc.]. It gives them a little bit of a chance to breathe but also traps some humidity in there to keep them fresher."

You could take the opportunity to wash the produce when you're transferring it, too, to save you a step later. Just be sure you dry it completely.

It's a little more work than simply tossing produce in the fridge, but hopefully it can keep you from having to toss it in the trash.
