The iPhone is going to get an incredible screen next year

The iPhone has a pretty lackluster screen compared to the gorgeous displays on certain flagship Android smartphones, but that could change in 2017.

According to Nikkei Technology Online (via AppleInsider), Apple has been discussing OLED screen technology with Samsung and LG, both of which manufacture OLED displays found on smartphones and TVs.

OLED screens make for a beautiful picture because they reproduce better, deeper, and richer colors than the LCD technology that's currently used in iPhones. The picture below doesn't do the Galaxy Note 5's AMOLED screen justice, but you can still see that the colors on the Note 5's screen (right) are richer than on the iPhone (left):

OLED screens can also reproduce the color black a lot better than an LCD screen can, which looks more like dark gray. Check it out for yourself below where both the iPhone and the Galaxy Note 5 are displaying the same picture of the color black:

OLED screens can produce "perfect" black because the pixels that show the color black actually turn off, whereas an LCD screen constantly has light shining behind the pixels, thus reproducing that dark gray color instead of black.

Deeper black colors on the screen means anything bright will pop out, making for a more dynamic and striking picture than what an LCD can reproduce.

Samsung has been using a form of OLED display, called AMOLED, for severeal years in its smartphones, which gives its smartphones an edge over the iPhone. But all that could change in 2017 if Apple introduces an OLED display on what could be the iPhone 7s in 2017.
