Some people are reporting that their iPhones are randomly shutting down without warning, requiring a forced restart to work again.
Complaints started surfacing when the iPhone 6S went on sale last week, and even though Apple released an update to its mobile operating system with bug fixes this week, shutdown problems persist.
The issue seems primarily to affect the iPhone 6S, though owners of older iPhone models have also noticed random shutdowns after updating to the latest version of iOS 9, reports MacRumors.
A growing Reddit thread has numerous reports of iPhone owners seeing random shutdowns, and some have noticed that the device's Touch ID fingerprint sensor felt hot to the touch.
"I had it happen to my 6s+ this morning... it was very strange," one Reddit user said on October 1, a day after Apple's iOS 9.0.2 update came out with numerous bug fixes. "Also sucked since it did it after I hit snooze on my alarm... if I didn't have my wife to wake me, who knows when I would've gotten up!"
"Yes this has happened to me twice now," wrote another Redditor on October 1. "The first time it happened, the home button was extremely hot to the touch, like almost unbearable if you held it there for a couple seconds. I had to do a soft reset both times, however, I did not check to see if the home button was hot the second time."
At least two Tech Insider employees who have the iPhone 6S have had their new phones shutdown without warning.
Threads on Apple's support forum and the MacRumors forum are filled with similar experiences.
The general consensus to fix the issue seems to be a forced restart of the iPhone, which you can do by simultaneously holding down the home and power buttons for 10 seconds.
Tech Insider has reached out to Apple for comment on the bug and will update the story if Apple responds.
