Here's the best evidence that Apple will remove the headphone jack in the iPhone 7

Rumors about Apple ditching the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 got a shot of reality on Tuesday.

According to 9to5Mac, a piece of code in the latest version of the iOS 9.3 beta suggests that the iPhone 7 will not have an "input" for headphones.

The code was spotted by iOS developer @kyoufujibaya on Twitter. The specific code in question says: "Headphones.have.%sinput.NO."

That lines up nicely with the rumors that Apple is planning to ditch the old headphone jack for the iPhone 7.

Still, it's not as clear cut as it seems.

The code suggests that no headphones at all will have an "input" into the iPhone 7. That contradicts the fact that you can plug headphones with Lightning connectors into the iPhone's Lightning port to listen to music, as the Lightning port is an "input" into your iPhone.

That's unlikely to be the case, as iPhone users wouldn't have any wired options at all, even with adapters to make their old 3.5mm headphones compatible with the iPhone's Lightning port. It would mean they'd have to rely entirely on Bluetooth for listening to music with the iPhone. We doubt that'll happen. Apple will almost certainly let iPhone owners use wired headphones if they want.

The code is part of a beta version of iOS, meaning it's still in the testing phase. With that in mind, a lot of things can change between this beta version and the final version that will roll out to iPhone users.
