These are the first images of the Hyperloop test track being built in Nevada

The Hyperloop is a futuristic mode of transportation that consists of passenger pods traveling through tubes at speeds of more than 500 miles per hour. And the first one is being built currently in the desert, north of Las Vegas, Nevada.

It's not ready for high-speed travel just yet, but it appears to be coming along nicely.

The California based start-up Hyperloop Technologies announced in December 2015 that it would construct an open air, half-mile test track on the 50-acre site to perform Propulsion Open Air testing. This particular kind of testing entails sending its electrical motors down the track at some 300-miles per hour.

The company also said it aimed to begin testing the system during the first quarter of 2016.

In early January, CNN published images of the tubes that had been delivered to the site, but no images of the open air test track were shown.

Hyperloop Tech posted an image of the track's construction in late January, but it has not shared much since.

Drone footage recently published on YouTube, though, shows that the company has made significant progress on its first track.

The video, posted by the drone piloting company AviSight, shows the tubes and the open air track.

Hyperloop Technologies did not reply to our request for comment in time for publication. However, it appears that the footage was originally shot by AviSight as part of a news story for the CBS affiliate Las Vegas Now on February 26.

The start-up said in December that it aims to complete a separate two-mile, full scale prototype test track by the end of 2016 or early 2017. However, the company has not yet announced a site for the full-scale test system.

Tesla Motors and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk first introduced the Hyperloop concept in a white paper in 2013. However, Musk chose not to pursue the project commercially and made his research open-source so that other companies could continue developing the technology.

Since then, a few start-ups, including Hyperloop Technologies and another California-based company called Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), have started moving forward with building test tracks.

HTT is also working on building its first five mile test track this year.
