You can finally order Girl Scout cookies online — but there’s a catch

The Girl Scouts organization launched an online platform last year they call Digital Cookie 2.0 that allows Girl Scouts to sell their cookies on personalized websites.

But there’s still a catch — you have to actually know a Girl Scout to buy the cookies online and you can only order during the cookie-buying season.

Here's how it works: each Girl Scout makes her own personalized cookie website where her customers can place an order and she can track orders and set her personal goal. Different troops will be selling cookies at different times throughout the year, so check with your local Girl Scouts council to see when they start selling cookies.

In true Girl Scout style, the girls initiate the cookie sale, whether online, via email, or in person at the cookie booth with their mobile app,” the Girl Scouts website explains. “It’s a lot like buying your cookies at a traditional cookie booth, but with an online twist.”

Because the Girl Scout has to be the one to initiate the order, that means not everyone will be able to get their Samoas or Thin Mints fix.

Which is a shame, especially because not only are online cookie sales more convenient, but they also ship directly to customers within three to five business days, according to the Huffington Post. That’s much faster than waiting weeks or even months for your friend’s coworker’s cousin’s daughter to deliver your boxes.

If you do order online, you won't have to worry too much about safety. According to the Girl Scout website, customers’ personal information will be protected with encryption or other security measures and the girls themselves will also be learning about internet safety skills.

If you haven’t been invited by a Girl Scout online, you can find a local cookie booth by entering your zip code on the Girl Scouts website or by finding your local Girl Scout council.
