The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge are just about here, and if today’s wave of initial reviews are any indication, they’re poised to be two of the best Android phones of the year.
There are many reasons to look forward to either flagship — their sharp, colorful OLED displays, their top-tier cameras, their Gear VR support, their performance and battery gains, how little real estate they waste, most things that aren’t TouchWiz — but Samsung’s most convenient upgrade this year might also be its simplest: a return to microSD storage support.
If you plan on picking up one of these two (or any phone with a microSD slot), and you want to take advantage of the extra space, have a look at the Samsung Evo microSD card. As of this writing, Amazon has its 128GB model down to $40 — $10 off its usual going rate, and an all-time low.
Although the Evo is now a generation old, it remains a worthy buy for anyone who prioritizes sheer capacity for the money. It’s still fast enough to not annoy you — see StorageReview’s favorable writeup for deeper test results — but you’re mostly buying it because each model provides good value. This deal only exacerbates that.
If you need stronger performance, however, try the Evo's follow-up, the Samsung Evo+. As we’ve said before, it more or less doubles the Evo’s read speeds — though it doesn’t notably boost write speeds — without jacking up costs too high. Its 128GB model appears to be discounted at the moment, too, though it’s still $10 more than the Evo.
Either way, we should note that Samsung doesn’t support Android’s "Adoptable Storage" feature, meaning that the new Galaxy phones don’t treat microSD cards like internal storage. You’ll have to move apps around manually. Plenty of microSD-supporting devices do follow Google’s lead, though.
The 32GB of space baked into the entry-level Galaxy phones will be plenty for some, but if you’re the type to stuff a bunch of games, movies, or photos onto your device, either Evo card is well worth a look. Just know what you value first.
