Samsung's new Galaxy S7 has a clever liquid cooling system

Samsung figured out a clever way to keep its new Galaxy S7 smartphone cool.

Normally, phones let heat dissipate naturally, but the S7 has some of the latest, fastest, and most powerful specs in a smartphone, and all that horsepower means more heat than usual. To prevent overheating, Samsung added a liquid cooling system to the Galaxy S7.

During the S7's announcement at MWC, Samsung's senior vice president of product strategy Justin Denison described the liquid cooling system as "air conditioning for your phone."

"There's a tube containing a liquid that vaporizes at high temperatures and then condenses at low temperatures," he explained.

The liquid absorbs heat from the S7's processor where it is vaporized. The vapor containing the heat moves through the tube away from the source of the heat and condenses back into a liquid where the heat is dispersed.

It's a seemingly drastic measure, but keeping important components like the processor cool can greatly extend the lifespan of your device. Too much heat can damage components permanently.

The iPhone will actually switch itself off automatically if it detects that it's close to overheating to protect the components inside.
