Ford filed a patent Dec. 15 for a car whose back wheel can be used to create a ready-to-ride unicycle.

The car-turned-unicycle is meant to help those who typically pack bikes or other modes of transportation into their cars to use later, according to the patent.

Offering this "multi-modal transportation" system could help those who want to switch between a car and smaller mode of transportation without the nuisance of storage.

The car would come with an automatic jack that would allow the driver to easily disengage the back wheel.

You would then attach the handlebars, hub, and electric motor to transform the wheel into a unicycle. The jack would keep the car standing as normal without its back wheel.

The patent doesn't necessarily mean we will see this kind of vehicle on the market anytime soon, if ever.

But it's a cool look at how automakers are innovating with their designs.
