Korean rapper PSY has released his seventh album along with a music video for the song “DADDY” that’s reminiscent of his 2012 hit “Gangnam Style.”
And now, we finally know exactly what he’s saying.
The music video debuted yesterday and thanks to its catchy melody and captivating dance sequences, it’s already been watched over 5.5 million times and counting. Some YouTube commenters are hoping it surpasses “Gangnam Style,” which has been watched over 2.46 billion times on YouTube alone.
Just like “Gangnam Style,” PSY raps and sings in Korean, which means some of the lyrics are lost on US fans. Apart from the English-language chorus — a remix of Will.i.am’s song “I Got It From My Mama" — there are lots of moments where fans might be wondering what PSY is saying.
Luckily, the blogger Sleepless Aliana transcribed all of the lyrics in Korean and I had my friend Linda Lee, who also teaches the language in New York City, help me translate for US audiences the complete song lyrics. She was able to translate the entire thing, but we've kept the words oppa (a term of respect used to refer to an older male relative or friend) and unni (an older female relative or friend) intact because they don't have literal English translations.
