If you’re wondering about the direction or trajectory of Tesla Motors, the high-tech all-electric car company run by Elon Musk, look no further than this blog post from nearly 10 years ago, which was penned by Musk.

Back in August 2006, Musk took to his company’s blog to write “The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan.”

At the very bottom of that blog post, Musk sums up the company’s strategy and plan in just 31 words:

Build sports car
Use that money to build an affordable car
Use that money to build an even more affordable car
While doing above, also provide zero emission electric power generation options
Don't tell anyone.

There’s more details in the original blog post, but here are a few highlights:

  • Despite Tesla’s first car being a pricey electric sports car, Musk said “our long term plan is to build a wide range of models, including affordably priced family cars.”
  • Musk said “the strategy of Tesla is to enter at the high end of the market, where customers are prepared to pay a premium, and then drive down market as fast as possible to higher unit volume and lower prices with each successive model.”
  • Musk describes how the company’s second car will be a “sporty four door family car” at roughly half the price of the Tesla Roadster, “and the third model will be even more affordable.” As it turns out, Tesla’s second car the Model S was a bit cheaper than the Roadster, but the company’s third car, the Model X SUV, will be a bit more expensive than Model S. Tesla is, however, aiming for a $35,000 starting price for its fourth car, the all-electric Model 3, which should arrive in the next few years.
