Elon Musk said the Gigafactory is so big it's like an 'alien dreadnought'

When Elon Musk's Gigafactory fully opens, it will be huge.

No, literally. Last we heard, the total planned floor space for the giant battery plant is 13.6 million feet. That would make it the second largest building by volume, just behind Boeing’s Everett, Washington, plant.

But it turns out Musk is looking to beat out the Boeing plant, declaring at Vox Media's Code Conference Wednesday night that it will be the "largest footprint building of any kind in the world."

"Of any kind, not just factories, literally of any kind," he said.

Why so big?

"It's not scale for scale's sake, it's just if you say, 'well, we want to accomplish these goals' then you kind of have to make a big thing," he said.

Tesla's goals, of course, are not small. The company aims to produce one million cars per year by 2020

Some will get to see the giant factory sooner than later. Some Tesla owners have been invited to a grand opening at the Gigafactory on July 29th. Musk invited his interviewers Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg to the future event at the Code Conference.

"It's worth seeing, this is crazy, this is like an alien dreadnought — it's really nutty," Musk said.
