Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said Dubai is planning to have 25% of all car trips be driverless by 2030, the Associated Press reported. The project will be a joint venture by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority and the Dubai Future Foundation to cut down on costs and traffic accidents using driverless transportation.

Cities all over the world are pushing driverless transportation. Japan is launching an unmanned taxi service this year in the hopes of commercializing them in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. And by the end of this year, people in Singapore can ride around the city in driverless pods.

Citymobil2, a program partially funded by the European Union, is also trialing driverless, electric shuttles in cities from Trikala, Greece to Vantaa, Finland.
