Much of the teaser makes it look as if the movie will follow a lot of Strange's origin story straight out of the comics.

No. In the comics, Dr. Strange is a rather callous, selfish man, caring only about his money and himself.

Oh, and of course his prized, dexterous hands.

His hands were severely injured.

In the comics, his hands suffered from shattered bones and from damaged nerves after his accident.

We see that the accident leaves his hands a trembling mess. You can probably bet he'll never perform surgery again.

In the hospital we get a brief glimpse of Rachel McAdams. She'll be playing one of Stephen's fellow colleagues. Perhaps she'll be a future romantic interest of Strange's as well?

You can bet that Strange doesn't take the news too well.

In the comics, he spends much of his time and money trying to find a way to fix his hands to get back to work.

Then he hears rumors about someone called the Ancient One who supposedly has powers to cure anything.

When he arrives in the comics, though, he doesn't take her seriously. He believes the Ancient One (who's a male in the comics) is a fraud.

Big mistake. When he tries to leave the temple, he finds he can't. He's trapped by a snowstorm. Wonder who caused that? (Definitely the Ancient One.)

She has no intention of simply fixing his hands. She sees his selfish persona. But for some reason, she also sees some good hidden somewhere within Strange, and she plans to get it out of him.

There, Strange meets Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a student of the Ancient One.

He becomes an adversary of Strange's in the comics; however, Deadline reported the character will be a take on several others from the "Doctor Strange" mythos. He may become an important ally.

In the comics, Strange is forced to stay at the temple because of the inclement weather and study under the Ancient One's tutelage.

But the trailer makes it look as if Strange may beg the Ancient One to train him.

"You wonder what I see in your future? Possibility," the Ancient One tells Strange.

From there, things get trippy. And we're introduced to the idea of other dimensions and realms. Visually, it feels very "Inception"-like.

"We like the idea of playing with alternate dimensions. [Doctor] Strange, in a very [Steve] Ditko, crazy astro-trip way, traveling through dimensions and traveling through other realms is something we think is very cool. And playing with perceptions of reality," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said at Comic-Con in 2014.

We also see a glimpse of Mads Mikkelsen, who will be playing the film's still nameless villain. Entertainment Weekly described him as "a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect" against the Ancient One.

But before Strange or anyone else can take him on, the neurosurgeon will be prepped to take on the role of the Ancient One.

The Ancient One gives Strange a new purpose. She tells him that while his life as a surgeon saved thousands, "there are other ways to save lives."

He'll eventually become the Sorcerer Supreme himself, Doctor Strange, who will protect the Earth from outside magical forces. An image of Strange in his costumed suit was teased in the end shots of the trailer.
