Disney made a robot that can climb up walls

Disney created a robot capable of propelling itself up walls with ease.

Released on their YouTube page today, the wall-climbing robot called VertiGo is capable of transitioning itself from the ground to up a wall with little difficulty. Disney created it in collaboration with ETH Zurich, an engineering and science university that held the summer trials of the first Olympics for bionic athletes.

VertiGo has two propellers that allow it to thrust itself onto the wall. It then can travel up the wall or across it using its four wheels. Select parts of the robot were 3D printed, according to the Disney research paper about VertiGo.

The propellers not only get the robot on the wall, but enable it to traverse over indentions like masonry. The propellers are capable of controlling the direction of the thrust, allowing the robot to move freely once on the wall. VertiGo is not autonomous.

"By transitioning from the ground to a wall and back again, VertiGo extends the ability of robots to travel through urban and indoor environments," Disney wrote in the research paper.
