If you're looking for a news app these days, you have plenty of options to choose from.

There's the excellent NYT Now, Breaking News, The Wall Street Journal's What's News, Nuzzel, BuzzFeed News, Facebook Notify, and of course, Tech Insider's own app.

Rewind back to 2011, and there was really only one app that specialized in delivering breaking news on mobile: Circa News. In an age when mobile apps were far from a priority for most news publications, Circa excelled at delivering bite-sized, quick news updates on what was happening in the world.

Circa shut down earlier this year due to a lack of funding, but in an interesting turn of events, it's being reborn in 2016 with a focus on original reporting and video.

The Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns over 150 local TV stations in the U.S., announced on Monday the hire of a former executive from The Washington Post to lead Circa's relaunch in the spring of 2016. Sinclair, which bought Circa's assets right before the startup folded in June for $800,000, plans to hire 70 journalists with an operating budget of $10 million for next year.

The new Circa app will be able to tap into Sinclair's TV stations for showing videos. Sinclair COO Rob Weisbord told The Wall Street Journal that "We expect it [Circa] to be as significant as Vice and Vox and Buzzfeed."
