Chinese researchers have created a car that can be driven using mind-control technology.

Similar to how other brain computer interface (BCI) systems work, the driver is required to wear special headgear that captures brain signals to direct the car.

Researchers from ISI lab at the university claim the car can move straight forward, backward, come to a stop, be locked and unlocked with their brain-controlled vehicle system. The system can capture EEG (electroencephalogram) signals from user's brain and send the control command to the car, researchers told Reuters. Reuters/Kim Kyung-Hoon

According to a Reuters report, the researchers at Nankai University used 16 electroencephalogram (EEG) sensors to capture signals from the driver’s brain. Then they created a computer system that selects the relevant signals and translates them into commands to control the car, like drive forward or reverse.

The researchers behind the system claim that the technology can be used to drive the car forward, reverse, brake, lock, and unlock the doors.

While the technology is unquestionably impressive, it’s not the first time something like this has been done.

In 2011, researchers at the AutoNOMOS research team of the Artificial Intelligence Group at the Freie Universitaet (Free University) demonstrated similar technology in a modified Volkswagen Passat.

Like drivers of Nankai University’s car, the driver of the Volkswagen also was required to wear a neuroheadset that could translate brain signals.

And most recently, McLaren introduced a concept Formula One race car called the MP4-X that they say could eventually incorporate brain computer interface technology so that the driver could control the car by simply wearing his helmet.

Researchers have also been experimenting with new ways to use BCI technology to help those with disabilities.
