Blue ice is forming on Lake Michigan and the photos look like something out of 'Breaking Bad'

If you are driving over the Mackinac Bridge on Lake Michigan, you might notice the ice on the lake is a distinctive color right now: blue.

Check it out. Photographer Kelly Alvesteffer shared an album of over 100 photos of the incredible phenomenon on Facebook where the images have been like by over a thousand people.

"Walter White's discards," commented one Facebook user, comparing the turquoise ice to the blue meth Walter White cooks up in "Breaking Bad."

Unlike Walter White's creations, the blue ice on Lake Michigan has much less illicit origins. The bizarre coloring has to do with the ice's density. "Ice only appears blue when it is sufficiently consolidated that bubbles do not interfere with the passage of light," explains this Carleton University guide to glaciers

This isn't the first time ice has grabbed people's attention online this winter. Lake Superior recently made headlines for this awesome footage of sheets of ice crashing crazily against it's shores. You can check that out here.
