The new 'Batman v Superman' trailer may hint at an even bigger villain than Doomsday

The latest "Batman v Superman" trailer took fans by surprise when it showed off new villain Doomsday.

While fans were trying to decide whether the monster resembled some combination of a "Lord of the Rings" troll and Ninja Turtle, there was a tease for another big villain in the DC universe in the three-minute trailer.

Did you spot it?

Head back to the 2:00 mark in the trailer.

You'll see Ben Affleck's Batman fighting a bunch of armed men sporting Superman patches.

Take a look at the skies and you'll notice a bunch of winged creatures flying around, picking up random people.

What are they?

They look like something out of "The Wizard of Oz," but our best guess is that these are Parademons, the minions of an even bigger villain named Darkseid.

Here's how the Parademons look in the comics:

And here's another look at them in animated form going up against Superman:

Who is Darkseid?

Darkseid's an even bigger villain of Superman's than Doomsday. He's the ruler of a number of planets including his home of Apokolips (get it?). All you really need to know about him is that he's one of those villains who just wants to rule the entire universe. Naturally, Earth seems like a good place to try and conquer.

When we see Darkseid's supposed minions in the "Batman v Superman" trailer it's in a shot which appears to be part of a giant dream sequence by Bruce Wayne on what may happen if Superman isn't stopped. However, if that's the case, it's not clear why he's seeing a vision of Parademons. If this isn't a dream, maybe it's a vision Wayne is shown.

Whatever the case, I wouldn't expect to see Darkseid in next spring's "Batman v Superman" (that would be overkill, right?), Instead, this could be a tease of the villain for a future movie to come.

After "Batman v Superman," Warner Bros. has a full slate of DC Comics movies ready to roll out leading up to a giant two-part "Justice League" movie which will be released in 2017 and 2019. Darkseid may very well be one of the big villains the entire Justice League team will have to face off against together.
