That adorable monkey emoji may be a lot more controversial than you once thought.
Hilarious Twitter user Jonny Sun, known on Twitter as "Jomny Sun," recently posed this very "seriouse [sic] question": Is this set of three monkey emojis one monkey making three faces or three different monkeys?
—jomny sun (@jonnysun) May 9, 2016
It’s a simple question, but so far, over 34,000 people have voted on the issue and the results are incredibly close: At the time of this post, the votes were 49% for one monkey, and 51% for three monkeys.
The majority of the Tech Insider office believes it's one monkey making three faces, though a few vocal reporters believe these are the "three wise monkeys" that represent "see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil."
A lot of Twitter users agree. This user points out that Unicode, the group behind the emoji approval process, calls the monkeys "see-no-evil monkey," "hear-no-evil monkey," and "speak-no-evil monkey."

And beauty editor at Good Housekeeping Sam Escobar pointed out that the three wise monkeys are named Mizaru, Kikazaru, and Iwazaru in the tale.

And some people are basing their opinion on their gut instinct.

Two Twitter accounts have even sprung up over the issue: The Monkey Emoji and monkey triplets. They're currently arguing with each other in the subtweets.

It's war.
