We might get to see Apple's new big-screen iPad next week

A couple of new iPhones and a snazzy new Apple TV aren't the only products that Apple will announce at its huge event next week.

According to 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman, who in recent days has been prolifically leaking information ahead of the September 9 event, Apple may also unveil a new big-screen iPad.

An iPad with a larger display — one that's intended for business clients — has been rumored for more than a year. It's been dubbed the "iPad Pro" by the press, and Gurman reports that will indeed be the tablet's name.

The device, according to Gurman, will go on sale in October and work with a Force Touch stylus that can detect pressure, allowing people to do different tasks on the iPad depending on how hard they press. It will run iOS 9.1, a new version of Apple's mobile operating system, and come with two speakers and an improved version of Siri. We first heard about the iPad Pro last year, when Bloomberg reported Apple was working on an iPad with a 12.9-inch screen. The iPad Air 2, the current iPad, has a 9.7-inch screen.

The iPad Pro, if released, will come at a time when Apple needs to ignite iPad sales. Apple still sells millions of the devices each year, but sales have slumped in recent quarters due to increased competition from inexpensive Android tablets and the fact that people don't update their iPads as frequently as they upgrade their phones.

Apple's huge success with its larger screened iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have also eaten into iPad sales, as some people may find a tablet less useful when their phone has such a large screen.

Apple doesn't usually announce updates to its iPad at the September event, but saves them for later in the fall. Gurman writes that there's a chance this could still happen and we may in fact have to wait another month or so to see the new iPad.
