Apple is finally filling the biggest hole on Apple TV

For years, the Apple TV has lacked an Amazon app.

This means that people with Apple TVs who want to watch Amazon programming — movies or TV shows they've downloaded from the retailer, or programs they want to stream as Prime subscribers — on their TVs have to stream them from another device via AirPlay.

It's kind of a pain, especially if you watch a lot of content from Amazon.

But that could be about to change. Amazon seems to be developing an app for the new Apple TV.

That's according to a message that Amazon sent Dan Bostonweeks, a software developer in Oakland, when he reached out to Amazon support about such an app.

The Amazon employee told Bostonweeks that an app for the Apple TV could become available "within a few weeks."

Bostonweeks told Tech Insider he heard from Amazon support within 15 minutes of reaching out.

Amazon declined to comment, and Apple did not immediately return a request for comment.

The new Apple TV, which came out in October, has an iPhone-like App Store that's open to developers, so theoretically, any developer could build an app for it. The previous versions of the Apple TV didn't have an App Store, so the selection of apps was much more limited.

Amazon's video streaming app is already available on just about every other major streaming box and video game console like Roku, PlayStation 4, and the company's own Fire TV.
